Memories of Morocco: Le Jardin Majorelle
I know that if odor were visible, as colour is,

One evening, after our conference business for the day was wrapped up, we were treated to a private tour of le Jardin Majorelle, the garden that belonged to the late Yves Saint-Laurent, and is now the resting place of his ashes.
This oasis, just outside the mèdina wall, consists of 12 acres of tropical pools, shady palms, cacti specimens, and that amazingly vibrant Majorelle blue (which is at first jarring, then your eyes adjust and it seems rather pretty) used extensively in the garden’s hardscape and architecture. The garden’s designer and namesake, Jacques Majorelle, bought the land and developed the garden and its art deco villa (designed by architect Paul Sinoir) in the 1920’s and ‘30’s. Majorelle opened the garden to the public in 1947. After his death in 1962, the garden and its villa fell into neglect.

In 1980, Yves Saint-Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, longtime visitors to and admirers of Morocco, bought the villa and gardens as a private residence, lovingly restoring the property to its former glory.

After Saint-Laurent’s death in 2008, Bergé donated Jardin Majorelle to the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent. Since then the gardens, re-opened to the public, welcome more than 600,000 visitors per year.
The garden is stunning, if a little contrived. It doesn’t resemble something that would have grown naturally, rather is appears controlled and perhaps too-well organized; perfectly suited to a couture designer who would have sought perfection in all things.
To commemorate our visit, I made sure to stop by their wonderful gift shop. There I picked up several beautiful scarves designed in a theme of the four seasons.
