Hayslip Design Associates, Inc. received BEST KITCHEN honors at the recent 2010 International Design & Architecture Awards, sponsored by Design et al magazine, held in London, England on October 15.
The winning kitchen is a warm blend of textures, enhanced by special, dramatic details, creating a spacious and user-friendly room.
Hand-scraped oak floors provide the foundation for custom cabinets with a soothing green patina and brushed granite countertops. The center island, large and accessible from every side, serves as a gathering place and functional work area. Hand-carved columns, inspired by 17th century columns which support the fireplace mantle in the adjacent breakfast room, support the corners of the Breccia de Benou granite top. Glass front cabinetry provides additional storage and a vegetable sink and warming drawers make for easy meal preparation.
Suspended above the center island is a hand-forged, iron pot rack adorned with Italian names of herbs designed and fabricated especially for this kitchen by Whitesmith & Company. Hand painted platters were created specifically to fit into the plate rack above the lettered fascia. The same artist painted the custom tile backsplash and the art for the refrigerator doors. The plaster and steel range hood repeats the Italian herbal detail and creates a focal point while counterpointing the classic style of the stainless steel range.
Double Subzero refrigerators and freezer drawers are encased in custom cabinetry designed to resemble a free standing armoire. The doors are painted in a scrolled pattern adapted from the hand-painted tile backsplash. Lighted display cabinets flank the refrigerator.
The breakfast room, adjacent the kitchen, boasts a fireplace with grape and vine details. The 17th century Italian columns supporting the mantle were found at the summer Olympia Antiques Fair in London. Heavily carved, they inspired the entire mantle. The lintel piece, below the mantle, was hand-carved by a local artisan and hand-finished to resemble the columns. The fireplace screen and chandelier echo the vineyard theme.
This kitchen was a completely collaborative effort involving the Hayslip Design Associates, Smith, Ekblad and Associates (the home’s architect) and the homeowners themselves. Additionally there were creative artists, cabinetmakers, metal smiths, lighting specialists involved. The result is a perfectly synthesized space.
